Since this is my first post, I will be talking about a couple of issues that didn't come out this week (and since there was only one this week). I wan't to cover some ground, so lets get this show started.
Batman and Robin #10: Basically, I can sum this book up in one phrase. BAD-ASS! The cover states that this is the return of Bruce Wayne, while he isn't in the book physically he still has a rather large roll. The book starts out with Damian running a board meeting at Wayne Enterprises, why is he running it? I don't know, after all he is only ten.....oh well, its a comic book. I really didn't see the point in that part of the book, but it might play a bigger roll in the coming issues so i will hold my judgment a while longer on that. Then we cut to Batman with the new character Oberon Sexton. This new guy, who we dont know what he looks like or who he really is yet, is talking about the Black Glove and about how they tried to tarnish Bruce Wayne's reputation before his "leave of absence." I really thought this point in the book was awesome, It really got me pumped up for the future of the series. In typical Grant Morrison fashion, It left a lot of questions and a lot to be desired. But in a good way. I don't want to go into much detail about the next half of the book because I just don't want to spoil anybodies fun. But it really, really, REALLY had me have bat-gasim. we have Batman, Robin, and Alfred talking about how Bruce Wayne may still be alive but trapped in time and how he could be leaving them clues to find him. You really just have to read it to find out how awesome it is. But, as I was reading this issue I started to realize that Grant Morrison has done an awesome job at developing all the characters, and Damian especially. This kid went from being my least favorite character to being my most favorite character in the series. No lie. He really is becoming a great character and showing lots of promise. There is an really down to earth "human" like moment between him and Dick talking about what will happen to them when Bruce gets back. How Dick will just go back to being Night Wing but how Damian probably won't get to be Robin and the position will be given back to Tim Drake. Damian really shows a side that he hasn't shown yet in any of the books. It was refreshing really. But the end of the book was a complete cliff hanger and really left me wanting more. Grant Morrison really is the master of batman right now. And I can't wait to see what happens next in the series. I give Batman and Robin #10 a 9.5/10.
Batman: Streets of Gotham #10: This was a really solid read. We find out more about this new guy going by the name of ABUSE, and if he is a good guy or a bad guy. And we also go back to the Zsasz story (which I thought has been the best so far). It is a really dark story about underground gambling, where people can bet on children fighting and killing each other with swords and knives. Damian really gets himself into some trouble in this book trying to fight to fight Zsasz, I thought that action in this book was really fluid and intense. I really didn't want the book to end. This is probably the best thing out other than Batman and Robin right now. Get this book! I Give Batman: Streets of Gotham #10 a 8.8/10.
Batman #697: One word. CRAP. It felt more like a Scooby Doo cartoon than a batman book! We find out who the Black Mask is finally!!!!....and its not nearly as shocking or cool as I thought it would be. It made sense and it fit fine into the story. I guess I just wanted it to be more shocking. While the art in this book is really great, some of the best around, it just left a bad taste in my mouth with everything else. The fight between Black Mask and Batman sucked, it was like "one-two-punch" and it was over. The one redeeming quality was the ending, with a monologue from Dick Grayson. It was a nice touch, but it just didn't have the poetic feeling that it could have had. Come on Tony Daniels! I expect more from you! I Give Batman #697 a 5.8/10.
Batman: Confidential 42: I really don't know how I feel about this one. The art is cool, but can be really inconsistent. For instance, we will have this really awesome close up of Batman where is really abstract and scary looking, then we have a shot that looks like a 5 year old drew it on a napkin. While the villain, Ghost, ( or whatever the hell you want to call that thing) is cool, there just wasn't enough of it like there was last issue. And my other big complaint is that there is some sexual tension between batman and this Pudgy blind chick. Its really awkward and brings down the book (and series really). And if someone could tell me why the HELL batman went to a library to use a computer? I mean, I know why he went. But couldn't he have called Alfred or something? come on, Batman sitting in a library using a computer? A LIBRARY? Now i'm just ranting. The first 2 issues of this series were awesome and this one was just kind of a bummer, but maybe its just the calm before the storm next month since its the last issue.
I Give Batman: Confidential 42 a 6.8/10.
Thats all that I am going to do right now. I would like to be able to do this once a week, but sometimes there might be to many books in a given week, so I will have to split the reviews up and do it more than once in a week. and Occasionally I will do a blog that might not be a review, but something batman related that I want to talk about. Thanks for reading, and if you have anything that you ever want me to review or talk about, just ask. I might pick it up at the comic shop next time I go.
